Coding and Auditing

Medical practices should evaluate their providers' CPT coding through the use of tools such as www.mdtools.com which can assist the practice in determining its likelihood of being audited. Evaluation and Management (E&M) utilization benchmarking allows the practice to determine how its providers are coding, compared to local and national benchmarks by specialty.
If the providers' utilization is significantly different from that of the benchmarks, then the practice should consider performing an audit. The audit should be followed by training which will focus on the "weak" areas of a provider's documentation. This should be an ongoing process.
